Northern Dawn Fishing Vessel News

Coast Guard responds to distress signal near Dutch Harbor

JUNEAU, Alaska - At 5:13 a.m. the Coast Guard received a signal from the electronic position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) registered to the fishing vessel Northern Dawn, located on the Bering Sea side (western side) of Dutch Harbor.

The Coast Guard command center here immediately responded by transmitting an urgent marine information broadcast (UMIB) and repeatedly attempting to hail the Northern Dawn. Air Station Kodiak dispatched a C-130 Hercules aircraft crew and is currently on scene doing flyovers. The Coast Guard cutter Alex Haley dispatched their Jayhawk helicopter crew after deverting from course. Adverse weather conditions forced the cutter to head south in order to safely deploy the helicopter rescue crew.

The fishing vessel Pinnacle was the first to arrive on scene after responding to the UMIB, locating a life ring and the Northern Dawn's EPIRB.

The fishing vessel Pinnacle and the Coast Guard continue to conduct search patterns in the vicinity at this time.
